There are only a few days a year when I am not at work. But I remember it well – this one, in the late summer of 1986, was one of those days when I was out and about in the afternoon for a change. When I came back around 5.00 p.m., I found the business card of the ROLEX representative on my desk. What can I say? I had rarely been so angry. Angry at myself, of course.
As I said, I was angry, restless and impatient, and found myself on a roller-coaster of emotions. After all, I had literally just missed the unique opportunity to land a ROLEX representation in the Swiss market and thus become the first new jeweller in 25 years.
But it all turned out fine. Because in May 1987, we went to the ROLEX head office in Geneva. And we brought back with us the first order for 55 ROLEX watches, including five Daytonas, which at that time still had mechanical hand-wound movements. I am still excited about it today, as this event has become a real success story for us.
